Clean Hands Project
Helping children protect themselves and
their communities through the simple act of handwashing.
Thank you for being a part of our initiative ‘Clean Hands’ to help children understand the ways in which they can keep themselves healthy and promote healthy living in their communities.
The COVID - 19 pandemic has highlighted to the world the need to wash our hands daily: clean hands – such a simple concept but yet lifesaving.
The Clean Hands initiative - what to do
We have a fantastic team working on this project: current & past teachers from the UK and people who are passionate about helping the children of Malawi. And of course, all of you.
Our initiative is simple but effective: we want to make sure that everyone, but especially every child, is washing their hands properly.
1. Encourage your pupils to help a teddy, a doll or their favourite toy to wash their hands!
2. Ask the parents, or if they’re at school, teachers to take a picture with all the soap on their hands (or paws!) and send it back to you, teachers.
3. Teachers, please send the pictures on to the Starfish Malawi Team at schoolslinking@starfishmalawi.com
4. We will publish the pictures (no children’s names) on our website for all our schools and supporters to see!
We’ve made a little video demonstrating how you can do this:
To see the wonderful pictures of this activity that have been submitted already, head over to the ‘Students’ Zone’.
As we go through the school year, we will be adding more material, resources and sharing school and pupil successes! Please get involved to help the world in which we live and our global community. Learning projects such as this connect classrooms, enhance learning and develop friendships across our partner schools in UK and Malawi.
Pillars
The Clean Hands project was inspired by work done by Tearfund “Pillars”.
There is so much good information available.

Gift from Ightham Primary School to Thugulu School to provide safe and clean water.
At Thugulu primary school we have installed a number of washstands close to the classrooms so that students have easy access to clean water during the day.
This has been made possible through the raising of funds by their linked school, Ightham Primary School.

Global Handwashing Day
There is a Global Handwashing Day on the 15th October every year. But don’t worry if you miss this date. Every day is a handwashing day! The Global Handwashing PowerPoint is the introduction to our Clean Hands project.
When starting the project, we encourage you to use the PowerPoints below.
Lesson Plans
The lesson plans for the UK and Malawi schools are below.
Tippy Taps
Salehurst Primary sent us some brilliant photos of their Tippy Taps. Thank you so much! They look fantastic and we hope you had fun creating and building them. To view them, head on over to our ‘Students’ Zone’.
Please continue to send in pictures of your creations and we will add them to our gallery.
Clean Hands Health Walk
One of our lesson plans for schools in Malawi and the UK involves going on a walk around the school and local area (if possible) looking at aspects of sanitation such as the provision of drinking water, whether there are toilets accessible to all and secure for girls and what happens to litter and rubbish. From this health walk, it is hoped that students will come up with action points and a plan to undertake necessary improvements. In the videos below, you can see how this looks in two different schools (UK and Malawi).
Watch the Malawi health walk video with your class and use it as a starting point for discussion and for your own health walk.
