Just One Photo

- LiveLink Lesson

Are you thinking of arranging a LiveLink session with your partner school through Starfish Malawi?

LiveLink is a great way to get your children engaged in quality learning activities based around the global citizenship curriculum. Through LiveLink, UK and Malawi children can talk, question, discuss and improve their understanding of key global issues as well as

build friendships with their fellow learners across the partnership.

LiveLink is a powerful tool for learning, but to be fully utilised these sessions need careful planning and

Our ‘Just One Photo’ lesson is a great place to start!

Learning Objectives:

  • To understand how poor hygiene contributes to disease and ill health

  • To appreciate the importance of clean water

First of all, ask your Malawi school to send you a photo of someone using a hand washing station at their school or in their village.

You can do this via your normal method of communication, probably WhatsApp.

Then you can teach ‘Just One’ lesson using the photo as a starting point.

(It’s easy to show your WhatsApp photo on the class whiteboard screen- just go into the photo gallery on your phone, open up the WhatsApp images in your library and find the photo you need. Then click ‘share’ and send it to your school email address. From there you can display the photo on the class screen for all to see and discuss.)

Here are some questions you could ask the children:

  1. What can you see happening here?

  2. Why is this important?

  3. What else do you notice in the photo?

  4. What do you think about this method of washing your hands?

  5. Where does the water come from?

  6. What is similar and what is different to the way we wash our hands here?

  7. Do you have any thoughts/ feelings/ reflections you would like to share?

  8. Are there any questions you would like to ask our partner school to find out more?

Here are some questions the UK schools might like to ask:

  • How many people use the tippy tap?

  • Where do they get the water from?

  • Do they dry their hands?

  • Do they have tippy taps at home? If not, where do they wash their hands?

  • Do they have showers?

  • Is the water always cold?

Collect together your class questions and decide which children are going to ask them. Prepare them so they learn to speak clearly and listen carefully to the answers, also to ask any follow up questions if anything is unclear.

Now you are ready for your LiveLink session! Just ask Starfish Malawi to set this up, then you can begin. We are very excited about this new venture and hope you are too- don’t forget to give us some feedback on how it all went!
